The international sphere that we operate in has supplied many news stories for this inaugural week’s Newsday Tuesday series piece. From Pope Francis taking in 12 refugees to Stephen Curry donating bed nets, this past week has shown that individual action can have international effects. There are also important developments in the global health space, with a new vaccine rollout by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. I am continuing to follow the relief efforts and aftershocks in Japan and Ecuador after magnitude-7.0 and magnitude-7.8 earthquakes, respectively, hit both nations on Saturday.
“World’s largest, fastest vaccine rollout targets polio’s ‘final strongholds’ – UN initiative,” by UN News Centre, UN News Centre: The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) will cease using the trivalent oral polio vaccine and instead shift to the bivalent vaccine in all of the 155 countries and territories that it operates in.
“How Stephen Curry's 3-point shooting scores for kids in Africa,” by Daniel Brown, The Reporter: Beyond shattering his already historic 3-pointer record, Stephen Curry has personally donated 1,206 insecticide-treated bed nets to the UN Foundation-led Nothing But Nets campaign, which fights malaria. World Malaria Day is next Monday, April 25.
“Pope Returns to Vatican With 12 Syrian Refugees After Trip to Greek Island,” by Daniel Politi, Slate: After visiting a refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos, Slate tells of Pope Francis’ journey and return with 12 refugees, who will now be staying in Rome.
“Report: Melting Antarctic ice could add 3ft to global sea levels,” Carolyn Beeler, USA Today: Ahead of Earth Day, Beeler covers a recently released report in Nature that found historical vulnerabilities to the West Antarctic Ice Sheet and how even small melting has resulted in higher global sea level.
“Ethiopian forces hunt South Sudan gunmen who killed 208 in raid,” by The Guardian, The Guardian: The Guardian reports that more than 100 children were kidnapped during an attack in Ethiopia.
“U.N., U.S. condemn Gambian crackdown after death of opposition members," by Edward McAllister, Reuters: In this article, McAllister sums up the condemnation from the UN and US following the death of members of the political opposition in Gambia.
“World Bank Group Urged to Help Solve Refugee Crisis, Other Challenges,” by The World Bank, The World Bank: This feature story provided by the World Bank discusses the 2016 World Bank Group-IMF Spring Meetings and the urges by many, including Queen Rania of Jordan, to help solve the refugee crisis, climate change, and threats to global health.
